MALAWI: ECM Condemns Abduction, Beating of Catholic Nun
Luke Bisani
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has expressed dismay with the abduction and beating of a Catholic nun, a member of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM), by unknown people who pretended to be good Samaritans on the morning of Thursday, April 11th, 2024, in Zomba.
In a statement that has been signed and was released on Friday, April 12, 2024 by the Catholic Bishops in Malawi, the nun was assaulted and tortured by the occupants of the car, who took her to a destination beyond where she was intending to go.
“In the course of assaulting her, the assailants told the Catholic nun that this was due to the fact that they did not subscribe to her Catholic faith and her identity as a Religious. The assailants went further and demonstrated their intolerance by forcefully removing and throwing out of the car window the rosary and the crucifix she was wearing, leaving her hurt, helpless and traumatized,” reads part of the statement.
The bishops have since urged the law enforcers to diligently investigate the horrific attack as a way of curbing the degenerated hateful tendencies of religious intolerances in Malawi.
The Catholic bishops have further urged religious leaders in the country to preach peace and peaceful co-existence to their flock.
In their recent Pastoral Letter released this year, The Sad Story of Malawi, Catholic bishops warned Malawians against developing tendencies that demonstrate religious indolence in Malawi.
