The Education Department of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has commenced the development of a comprehensive Child Safeguarding Policy for all Catholic schools, aiming to provide a framework adaptable to individual school contexts.
Speaking during the 2-day Safeguarding workshop for Head Teachers from Special Catholic Schools in Lusaka, ZCCB Safeguarding Officer Mr. Fedelis Hamwemba emphasized that the policy seeks to protect children from any harm and prevent exposure to abuse within educational environments.
Mr. Hamwemba highlighted that the policy, which began its drafting phase in January 2024, includes a dedicated chapter addressing safeguarding issues specific to children with special needs in special schools.
He clarified that this national document allows schools the flexibility to either domesticate it to suit their needs or implement it as is.
Anticipating the conclusion of the policy formulation by the end of August 2024, Mr. Hamwemba emphasized the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of children in Catholic schools.
In response, participating Catholic Head Teachers commended the Church’s proactive approach in implementing such an initiative, recognizing its potential to empower children to speak up against safeguarding issues.
They acknowledged the vulnerability of many children, especially those in special schools, and expressed optimism that the framework would guide teachers in admissions and protection from various forms of abuse, as well as aiding those who may have experienced abuse.
The Head Teachers called upon the government and various stakeholders to support the implementation of this framework once completed, emphasizing its potential to create a safer and more secure learning environment for children.
