The Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA), Associate Prof. Ruth Ngeyi Kanyongolo, has committed to teamwork as a way of achieving the vision and mission of the university.
Speaking after being introduced to the staff members and students of the university by the Chairman of the University Council, Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa, on Tuesday this week, the new Vice Chancellor expressed the need for teamwork among staff members and students.
“During my tenure of office, I would like the entire CUNIMA community to see me as a team player and not as the Brigadier General of a military battalion,” said Associate Professor Kanyongolo.
Prof. Ngeyi, while citing an African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, then go together,” expressed the need for working together for the university to achieve greater things.
The Chairman of the University Council then commended the new Vice Chancellor for accepting her appointment as the third Vice Chancellor of the university.
“We are very grateful to you, for accepting to take up this demanding responsibility. We fully understand that you have accepted this office with humility and out of a genuine desire to serve Christ and his bride, the Church,” said Archbishop Msusa.
Most Rev. Thomas Luke Msusa then urged the Vice Chancellor to use her vast academic and corporate experience to improve the standards and systems of the university.
He then thanked Rev. Fr. Dr. Wilfred Sumani, S.J., who has been acting in the capacity of Vice Chancellor for the past eight months.
Associate Prof. Ruth Ngeyi Ruth Kanyongolo is the first female Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University since its establishment in 2004.
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) appointed her as Vice Chancellor on February 9, 2024.
