The Catholic faithful in the Diocese of Zomba cheered patients at the Zomba Central Hospital and Zomba Mental Hospital as a commemoration of World Day for the Sick.

Speaking after the Eucharist celebration at Zomba Cathedral, the ordinary of the Zomba diocese, Rt. Rev. Alfred Chaima urged the health personnel at the two hospitals to work with passion in serving the lives of the patients.

“I advised them to consider every patient as carrying the face of Jesus and to always be moved by Jesus’s mercy and compassion as they handle every medical case brought before,” said Bishop Chaima.

“I further advised them that, as Catholics, they need to unite and work together as a family, be disciplined, and set good examples for the other health workers who serve at the two facilities,” added Bishop Chaima.

The bishop led the donation of assorted items to the patients in the children’s ward to alleviate the suffering.

The hospital workers have since requested that the church consider working with other stakeholders to build chapels at the two hospitals to help patients with prayer.

The Catholic Church observes World Day for the Sick on February 11, a day that St. John Paul II instituted on May 13, 1992. On this day, the church is called upon to be closer to those suffering from various illnesses and, where possible, extend a gesture of love by sharing with them some gifts. This was the first visit that the local ordinary made to the Central Hospital since he was consecrated on August 12, 2023.
