The Catholic Diocese of Zomba has disclosed that all is set for the celebration marking 100 years of the existence of the first minor seminary in Malawi, Child Jesus, locally known as Nankhunda, this year.
Speaking after meeting the celebration steering committee on Wednesday this week, the bishop of the diocese, Rt. Rev. Alfred Chaima, disclosed that the steering committee has put up plans for the celebration to be colourful.
The ordinary of Zomba Diocese further disclosed that the committee that is being led by the alumnus of the seminary, Alfred Mbewe, has been tasked with strategizing preparations for the celebration.
Bishop Chaima advised the committee to effectively implement the strategies that will ensure the diocese holds a memorable event for the seminary.
He then applauded the committee for accepting the challenge of organizing the centenary celebration for Nankhunda. The committee is to produce a special cloth designed for the celebration that will be sold for resource mobilization for the event.
Established in 1924 by Montfort Missionaries in Zomba, Nankhunda Seminary has produced bishops, priests, and people who are serving in high-ranking portfolios in both the public and private sectors.
Among the bishops that have walked through the corridors of Nankhunda are the late Archbishop James Chiona of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, bishop emeritus for Zomba Allan Chamgwera, the current Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, His Grace Thomas Luke Msusa and Archbishop George Desmond Tambala of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.
Nankhunda Seminary is on record as being one of the best schools in Malawi, offering secondary education to young Catholic boys as they discern their vocation to priesthood.
