The Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu has on Monday 8th January launched the 2024 Tree planting season at Katoto forest which is within the Bishop’s residence.
Held under the theme: Growing together; Mission for a better tomorrow About 2000 trees were planted during the launch and the diocese expects to plant 10,000 trees during this season in different parishes
His Lordship Bishop John Ryan and Auxiliary Bishop Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda graced the occasion.
Speaking in an interview, the Auxiliary Bishop appealed to the citizenry to plant more trees at their homes, offices and bare fields.
“We are experiencing climate change because we have used the trees that we found, now it’s time for us to replace to save the next generation,” he said.
He added that the Church has the obligation to take part in care the environment.
“Everyone must take care of the environment despite the cultural and religious differences, we must all quest to conserve and take care of our environment to mitigate the effects of climate change,” he explained.
In 2015, Pope Francis through a letter called Laudato Si appealed to everyone to respect and protect “Our Common Home”
Last year the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM)translated the Laudato Si document into Tumbuka and Chewa languages to enhance understanding of the document to the Catholics and people of good will for its effective implementation.
