A delegation from the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States of America was in Malawi from 5th to 11th December 2023 where they appreciated some of the missionary activities that the Catholic Church in Malawi is undertaking through the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) office.

The delegation which was led by Fr. Anthony Domenic Andreassi, visited some parishes in the Archdioceses of Lilongwe and Blantyre, and the Diocese of Zomba, including a visit to the Poor Clare’s Monastery at Maula Cathedral in Lilongwe.

Among others during the visit, they met Most Reverend George Desmond Tambala who is the president of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and Archbishop of Lilongwe, who expressed his gratitude for the courtesy call by the delegation.

In his remarks at the bishops’ house in Lilongwe, Archbishop Tambala shared his satisfaction with PMS’ visibility in all Catholic dioceses across Malawi and that most Christians are now able to tell what PMS is.

He further emphasized before the visitors that there is a cordial relationship between the Catholic Church in Malawi and other denominations which he said, “is vital in the promotion of the missionary work”.

PMS Malawi National Director the Very Rev. Fr. Vincent Mwakhwawa who is the Auxiliary Bishop-elect for Lilongwe said the visit was very helpful not only to the PMS office but also to the whole Catholic church in Malawi as they have learnt few things from the visitors on how best to promote the missionary activities.

“They came to appreciate how we are doing in terms of our activities but from our conversations throughout the visit we have learnt a number of things that we feel will be vital in our daily programs as PMS office and the Catholic Church in Malawi.”  Fr. Mwakhwawa said.

The delegation further wanted to appreciate how the mission solidarity funds of the universal church through PMS are being utilised in the work of evangelisation where it expressed commitment in supporting Malawi Church in different areas with a call for Christians to always remember PMS USA in their prayers.

The delegation visited areas such as Saint Benedetti Chitula parish in Kasiya, Saint Johns Primary school in the archdiocese of Lilongwe; two Catholic schools for the deaf and blind, and Our Lady Queen of Peace Chikapa pro-parish in the archdiocese of Blantyre, St Peters’ Majors seminary and Cyclone Freddy survivors’ houses at Sinuzi in the diocese of Zomba, among other areas.
