MALAWI: Catholic University Law Students Drill Locals on Inheritance Process

Students from the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Malawi have drilled students and community members surrounding Kandikira Parish on how they can prepare for their inheritance process when they die.
Speaking during the legal clinic held at Chikuli Community Day Secondary, Kadikira Parish in the Archdiocese of Malawi, the students urged community members to have a will that will help in sharing their property once they answer God’s call to return to His house.
The students advised the locals not to wait until they get old for them to write a will that will help relatives not misunderstand property sharing.
Head of Practical Legal Studies at the Catholic University of Malawi, Tamandani Kadyampakeni, said the legal clinic helps community members get counselling on what the law says on different matters.
“We usually target remote areas where we can make an impact, as the communities do not have a chance to meet lawyers or law students,” said Kadyampakeni.
He added that the clinic is important for students studying law to have practical experience on how they can help clients with legal matters.
Village head Chisembwere from Senior Chief Kuthembwe commended the legal clinic, arguing that it will help in lowering cases of property sharing.
Chisembwere added that the legal clinic has been an eye-opener for parents to avoid their children being victims of property grabbing by undeserving people who grab property on their behalf.
During the one-day legal clinic on will writing, the students also offered one-on-one legal counselling to the community members surrounding Kadikira Parish.
