ACWECA: Trains AWRIM Superiors, Council Members in Capacity Building
Sr. Immaculate Tusingwire
In the workshop that begun on 30th October to 3rd November 2023, the Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa (ACWECA) engaged the Superiors and council members of the Association of Women in Religious Institutes of Malawi (AWRIM) on topics of capacity building for leadership.
Sr. Christine Mwangi, the ACWECA Coordinator for Leadership and Mission, who was also present at AWRIM Secretariat where the workshop took place said that the aim of the training is to create awareness on the role of superiors and the council members in promoting teamwork and effective communication in the Religious institutes. They were also made aware of their obligation as stewards of the temporal goods of the Church.
ACWECA sees the need to help superiors understand their key role in the administration of temporal goods of the church and how to exercise good governance during their term of office. This was specifically emphasized under the topic on Cannon Law on the Administration of Temporal Goods and Good Governance. Other topics that were offered during the workshop included Team Work and Effective Communication, Finance management and Resource Mobilization and Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development all focusing on the responsibility of leadership in the religious institutes.
The training was sponsored by Missio Aachen through ACWECA. The same training has been given to superiors and councilors in Ethiopia and will be given to Tanzania Team from 6th to 11th November 2023. Other National Associations like Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe will receive the training next year 2024.
Sr. Christine also said that the choice of the group and the timing couldn’t have been better citing the great responsibility the superiors together with their teams have in the governance of their congregations and at this particular time, ACWECA is especially conscious about the newly elected leaders in some congregations who have and will mostly benefit from this training.
The participants appreciated the training and committed themselves to putting the knowledge received into practice so as to improve their various congregations. ACWECA will make a follow-up through ACWECA monitoring and evaluation office to see the impact and also plan for future training.
