ZAMBIA: SCCs in Zambia’s Livingstone Diocese, Transforming Lives through Faith and Fellowship
By Mwenya Mukuka
The Small Christian Communities (SCCs) in the Catholic Diocese of Livingstone in Zambia, have proven to be fertile grounds for the sharing of the word of God, according to Father John Rurangwa, the Pastoral Coordinator. Father Rurangwa expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role SCCs have played in nurturing faith, fostering community, and transforming lives as the AMECEA region celebrates the golden jubilee celebration of SCCs.
The SCCs, which have flourished to 504 within the Livingstone diocese, have allowed Christians to gather in homes for the purpose of studying, reflecting upon, and praying guided by the word of God. Father Rurangwa noted that the communal engagement with challenging messages from the Scriptures leads to a collective commitment to initiate changes that encompass spiritual growth, social harmony, and economic empowerment.
And Fr. Rurangwa has said the occasion of the golden jubilee celebration is being used to reflect upon the SCCs’ journey, their impact on the community, and their ongoing mission of evangelization. Citing the example of the Early Church as found in Acts 2:42-43, Father Rurangwa highlighted how SCCs serve as beacons of inspiration, attracting individuals who wish to be part of a united spiritual family.
“While the journey of evangelization remains long, SCCs continue to facilitate profound spiritual growth, even among those who are already faithful believers,” Father Rurangwa acknowledged.
In the run up to the Livingstone diocese’s golden jubilee celebrations of SCCs in the AMECEA on Saturday, December 2, 2023, the festivities lined up include special prayers by the SCC communities at the conclusion of each Eucharistic celebration, along with evaluations of the SCC’s role within the parish and the broader Church.
Father Rurangwa emphasized, “Each SCC will celebrate its Patron Saint with a sense of unity, mirroring the ongoing Synod of Bishops on Synodality, ensuring that no one is left behind. Ongoing formation in leadership, biblical and liturgical understanding, and enhanced participation of youth and children will all be central to the jubilee celebration.”
Highlighting the importance of leadership within SCCs, Father Rurangwa stressed the need for leaders who possess courage, strong faith, and an inclusive mindset. He also urged against using SCCs as platforms for punitive measures against inactive members, citing the importance of discernment and mercy, especially when considering individual circumstances.
Over the years, SCCs have become fundamental to the fabric of faith within the AMECEA region. These communities offer believers a platform for learning, sacramental preparation, church leadership, fundraising, and extending support to those in need. As the SCCs celebrate their golden jubilee, they stand as living testimonies to the power of faith, fellowship, and transformation in the lives of individuals and the community at large.
The golden jubilee celebration promises not only a reflection of the past but also a reaffirmation of the SCCs’ mission to carry the light of faith forward into the future, fostering a strong and united community of believers.
