UGANDA: From a Medical Doctor to Catholic Priest
Sr. Sarah Muhindo, Banyatereza Sisters
The Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese His Grace Lambert Beinomugisha on Sunday July 2nd 2023 ordained four deacons to priesthood with a call on them to be good shepherds at St Mary’s Cathedral Church-Rushoroza in Kabale Diocese.
Among the newly ordained priests was a one Davis Ahimbisibwe who, before joining the priestly formation, was serving in the hospital as a medical doctor.
Becoming a medical doctor in Uganda is one of the most prestigious and noble professions for many. But it is even rarer for one to opt out of active medical care to join priesthood.
Fr Dr Davis Ahimbisibwe, who was last week ordained a priest in the Catholic Diocese of Kabale, has no guarantee that he will return to minister to both the soul and the body. Born in a family of five, Dr. Ahimbisibwe is the only boy among the five girls in his family after his older brother died at the age of 8. Today his family is still struggling to comprehend how he opted to comprehend out of his life as a medical doctor and joined priesthood.
According to Fr. Dr. Ahimbisibwe, physical health is done with limitations but spiritual health is health that gives life for eternity world without end.
The Archbishop urged the newly ordained priests to surrender their strength, knowledge, and life to bring unity among Christians and have faith in God to boldly build the church of Christ in words and actions.
