Finally, the Archbishop of Lilongwe is set to welcome Catholic investors from Uganda to Malawi through a joint acquisition of a bank.

Most Rev. George Desmond Tambala in an interview with this reporter said that all is set to commission the new bank in the name of Centenary Bank Limited on 22 March, 2023 in the presence of four Catholic Bishops from the Uganda Episcopal Conference.

“It is a happy moment in our Archdiocese that we received good news that the Central Bank finally approved and issued a new license for our bank. Because of this we are expecting four bishops from Uganda to arrive on Monday 19th March alongside other Centenary Group officials to witness their investment being commissioned,” he said.

He said that the event will take a corporate style while the traditional Church launch will take place in April.

“We do not expect more people at this event as it is corporate in nature. However, we have plans to hold a traditional Catholic launch of the bank where members of the Archdiocese will pray in thanksgiving to the Almighty for the gift of the bank. I am sure about the date being April 15, but details of the event will be released as we get to the day by relevant offices,” he said.

The prelate of Lilongwe also thanked the priests and the Religious for what he observed as a team of God’s people with hope in prayer life.

“I am really encouraged by the spirit that the priests and the Religious in the Archdiocese showed in various forms including those that called for continued prayers for the success of the endeavor. I can ascertain that priests prayed for this bank deal to succeed. I am happy for their spirit and I owe them all many thanks,” he said.

He said that apart from their prayers, the men and women of God played a huge role in sensitizing the members of their institutions to come to terms with the new development. He said that this is the kind of spirit he expects even after launching the bank so that more Catholics start patronizing the bank facility.
