UGANDA: Teach Your Children Morals – Bishop Muhirwa Advises Parents
Masereka Peter
The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Uganda Rt. Rev. Robert Muhirwa has expressed concern over the increasing cases of homosexuality among the youth and school-going children.
While condemning the vice, Bishop Muhirwa said that the practice of homosexuality has increased among school-going children, especially those in boarding schools.
He adds that the people are promoting this vice by luring school children with money and other luxurious gifts to recruit them.
Bishop Muhirwa has therefore asked parents and school administrators to take the matter seriously and put measures to curb the spread of immoral behavior among children.
He also advised parents to teach their children morals and also to be contented with what their parents give then so that they are not lured with money.
Muhirwa advised the youth to respect their bodies as they are the temples of the Holy Spirit.
Recently there has been talk in the country about the rise of homosexuality in schools, and on Tuesday the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa directed the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports to investigate the reported practice amongst Ugandan schools.
The Bishop said this while leading the Holy Eucharist Mass at katosa Holy martyrs’ Villa in Kyenjojo district on Friday. Every January 27, Christians from Fort Portal Catholic Diocese converge at the Holy Uganda Martyr’s Villa in Katosa to remember St. Adolf Tibewalirwa also known as Ludigo Mukasa, one of the Uganda martyrs who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga for refusing to renounce their faith.
The Uganda Episcopal Conference authorized Fort Portal Diocese to hold an independent Martyr’s Day celebration in honor of Adolf Tibeyalirwa who was a native of Katoosa.
Bishop Muhirwa encouraged parents to teach their children Christian Values like respect, forgiveness, and love. He used to opportunity to advise fathers to fulfill their responsibilities in raising families.
Muhirwa said that it has become common in the current times for fathers to leave the responsibilities of raising children to mothers which is not right and also overwhelming on the side of women.
This year’s celebrations were animated by Kyarusozi Catholic Parish under the theme “Take your candle, go and light the World.”
