ZAMBIA: First Zambian Provincial Superior of Salesians of Don Bosco is Appointed

Fr Michael Kazembe Mbandama, SDB has been appointed as the Provincial for the Salesians of Don Bosco in Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Namibia (ZMB). This is for period of six years (2023-2029).

Fr Christopher Rychcik the outgoing Zambia Provincial Superior has disclosed the development.

Fr Mbandama was born on 8th September 1971 in Solwezi, Zambia, and finished secondary school at Solwezi Secondary Technical School in 1992 before proceeding to Don Bisco Training Center in Chingola where he knew about the Salesians of Don Bosco.

“He came to know the Salesians of Don Bosco in Chingola since his studying in Don Bosco Training Centre in Metal Fabrication and Welding Department from 1993. He entered our pre-novitiate in Lusaka on 1st January, 1996 and he competed the Novitiate in Moshi with a first profession on 15th August, 1998,” Father Fr Rychcik.

He studied Philosophy and Science of Education in Moshi – Tanzania and Lubumbashi, DRC from 1999 to 2005 respectively.

Fr. Mbandama also studied Theology in Lubumbashi from 2006 up to 2008;
he made his perpetual profession on 05th July 2008; he returned to Zambia to complete his theology studies at St Dominic’s Major Seminary in Lusaka where he obtained Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Pontifical Urbaniana University.

He was ordained a priest on 12th June, 2010 at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka, Zambia.

Since his ordination, he has been working in Lilongwe, Malawi, at Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute as a Principal and Rector of the Community.

Fr Mbandama holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Leadership and Change Management under Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom, formally Leeds Metropolitan University.

He will be installed as a first Zambian Salesian Provincial on 2nd February 2023, in Lusaka by the Salesian Regional Superior for Africa.
