MALAWI: ECM Mourns Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) joined the Catholic faithful around the world in mourning Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who died on 31st December 2022 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican after long illness.
In Statement signed by the Catholic Bishops in Malawi late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was a humble but firm teacher and defender of the Catholic faith who served the Church with great love and dedication from 19 April, 2005 until his retirement on 28th February 2013.
“In his retirement, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI continued to support his Successor, Pope Francis, and spent his time close to the Church as he silently offered his prayer for the Church he so much loved,” reads part of the statement
“In him we have an example of a humble servant of God who unselfishly poured his love for the Church. He will greatly be missed by the entire Church worldwide and all people of good will” further reads the statement.
In a separate statement, the diocese of Karonga has mourned Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as the one who created the diocese in 2010 and appointed Rt. Rev. Martin Mtumbuka as Bishop.
Bishop Mtumbuka has further disclosed that soon the diocese will construct a Pastoral Centre that will be named after late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
Born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger; 16 April 1927 – 31 December 2022) was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican State City from 19 April 2005 until his resignation on 28 February 2013.
