Students’ Union leadership from the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) have secured funds to be dispensed to female needy students for their Internet costs towards their education.

Confirming the development, the President of the Students Union at CUNIMA Venetia Kamulete said the donation follows a plea that was made to a United State of America (USA) citizen Molly Oliveira Simon to support needy students at the University.

“We met her when we were attending an Internet Conference in Lilongwe and she appreciated the fact that; despite having a poor internet connection, the service is very expensive, as a result, those that are less privileged students find it very challenging to access learning materials online” Said Kalumete.

Kamulete added that Oliveira Simon promised to find donors in the USA to support needy students at CUNIMA with internet costs.

“Later, she communicated that they are some organizations in the country that have expressed interest to support female needy students with money to buy data bundles for their internet connection” Added Kamulete.

The Student leader at the University further disclosed that the leadership plans to engage the donors to help those that do not have the gadgets that support internet connection.

Vice-Chancellor of the University Rev. Fr. Dr. George Buleya has commended Molly Oliveria Simon for her efforts to find donors that are to be supporting needy students at the University.

Fr. Buleya added that the donation will help the needy students to be accessing quality education through learning materials found on the internet.

Sixty needy female students from CUNIMA are be getting USD60 (approximately over MK61,000) per month for the next four years for them to be buying data bundles for their studies.

The Catholic University of Malawi is a fast-growing and dynamic institution of higher learning that was accredited by the National Council of Higher Learning (NCHE) to offer certificates, diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate degrees in Malawi and beyond.

The University has over six thousand students (both female and male students) coming from different family backgrounds, across the country.
