MALAWI: Catholic University Law Students drills Rural Students on Human Rights

Final year students from the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Malawi held a legal clinic at Chikuli Community Day Secondary School to drill students on their constitutional rights on education in the country.

The legal clinic at Chikuli aimed at enlightening the students to understands human rights entitled to them.

The law students further drilled students from Chikuli to understand their role in order to enjoy their right to education.

Head of Practical Legal Studies at the Catholic University of Malawi, Carnicius Kadyampakeni said the legal clinic further provided an opportunity to Students at the Secondary School to understand other forms of abuse and channels to follow when reporting such cases.

Kadyampakeni further added that the clinic also provided an opportunity to the law students to have a practical experience of meeting real clients outside the classroom.

“Teachers and students had a chance to learn more about the law of the country from our students and the legal advice to them,” said Kadyampakeni.

Headmaster for Chikuli Community Day Secondary School, Mr. Andrew Nkhoma commended the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Malawi for the legal clinic, saying students at the school have been motivated to work hard in class for them to qualify to study in higher learning institutions like Catholic University.

“I can see one or two students from this school studying law in future because of this clinic. They have been motivated to put an extra gear on their studies,” said Nkhoma.

Concurring with the Headmaster, a Form 3 student at the School, Asante Siliya, said the clinic has motivated her fellow learners to think for higher education after completing secondary education.

Siliya added that most of the students’ flock to work in South Africa after completing their Malawi School Certificate of Education (M.S.C.E) examination.

 The legal clinic further provided an opportunity to students from the university to put into practice their communication, interviewing, presentation, and legal research skills.

Faculty of Law is one of the seven faculties at the Catholic University of Malawi offering accredited law programme in Malawi.

The accreditation of the law programme at the university witnessed the Catholic University of Malawi becoming the first private university to have accredited law programme by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in the country.

Chikuli Community Day Secondary School is one of the schools found in Blantyre rural, under the Archdiocese of Blantyre.
