UGANDA: Over 16 Declared Dead and 6 Injured in a Mudslide in Kasese
The Ordinary of the Diocese of Kasese has condoled with the families affected by the mudslides in Kasika in Rukoki sub-county with a call for strategic plans and lasting solutions to minimize disasters in Kasese district.
The tragedy that happened Tuesday night claimed 16 lives while 6 were injured and over 150 people are displaced.
In his condolence Message to the Kasika people in Rukoki sub county, Bishop Kibira who sympathized with the bereaved families also asked government to expedite the plans for permanent settlement for the 2020 internally displaced people currently encamped in Muhokya town council.
He wished the survivors quick recovery, and called on believers in Christ and well wisher to join hands with him to collect relief to support mudslide
In the morning of Wednesday, over fifteen bodies had already been discovered and the discovery of another body in the afternoon put the death toll to sixteen.
ASP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, said the latest development is that the first fifteen bodies had been handed over to their families for a decent burial after a postmortem was done.
ASP Nelson who said the mudslide was due to heavy rains in the night, added that the different emergency teams were backing security for a possibility of recovering the remaining two people whose search was still in vain.
Hon. Gideon Mujungu, the Busongora South Member of Parliament said his colleagues from Kasese district had already presented to Parliament the concerns of the people of Kasika which includes among others, shelter, relief food and building materials among others.
In his condolence message, Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku, the Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese reminded mourners that everything has its own time and keeping prepared before the Lord, was the way to go for Christians.
Mr. Zakayo Kule Makuta, a primary teacher, area councilor and a survivor of the incident said it all started as a usual normal rain before he was alerted by alarms by the local residents after part of his residential house was swept off.
The Kasese district chairperson, Mr. Eriphaz Muhindi who sympathized with the grieved families asks the families near Kasika valley to shift to their neighbors and relatives for safety as his office consults for possible government intervention.
