UGANDA: Sant Egidio Community Lira Spearheads Youth Friendly Program on Peace Building

Sant Egidio community Lira Diocese has initiated a program with the aim of promoting peace in the families.

The program dubbed ‘School of Peace’ is targeting young children where they are taught on how to be peace lovers and peace promoters in their communities.

Ms. Janet Akite the Assistant Coordinator Sant Egidio Lira Diocese noted that through the program, they are engaging children from different family settings to ensure that they become peace ambassadors while focusing on ending violence, hatred in the vicinities.

She went on to share that the program is significantly impacting the lives of the people especially the victims of gender based violence and those who are involved in wrangles over land and other property.

Although the program has just been introduced, the assistant coordinator is optimistic that it will continue to yield positive impact among the community, the reason why the community should embrace in order to build peaceful community in the region.

According to Ms. Janet Akite, Sant Egidio Community at the moment is engaging children to embrace other activities that can make them become productive and relevant in the community, and to promote the spirit of self- reliance among the people currently.

Similar program shall also be rolled out in other parishes in a move to extend the similar services to the people who are greatly in need of assistance from the community of Sant Egidio especially victims of violence.

In a related development, Ms. Janet Akite further revealed that they are also making outreach programs especially to the elderly persons in the community in order to help them although they are faced with shortage of resources to implement their activities effectively.

Apart from visiting the elderly people she disclosed that they also target to implement their workplan by visiting babies home in Lira where they offer and share little resources to give comfort and consolation to them.

At the moment as part of charity, she said members of Sant Egidio community Lira are working tirelessly to help one of their friends who got involved in a tragic accident and lost his leg to acquire an artificial limb.

The work of Sant Egidio Community Lira Diocese is currently being observed by many stakeholders in the society who are also helping the poor elderly persons in the community so that they can provide for themselves.
