UGANDA: Caritas Lira Donates Oxen to Improve Livelihoods for Rural Families

Caritas Lira Diocese is making interventions to raise the household income among the families in Lango sub-region to enhance their livelihoods support.
The families being supported under groups registered with Caritas Lira under the project named Food, Income and Livelihood were recently given pairs of oxen to boost their level of Agricultural production and livelihoods.
Currently Caritas Lira through Caritas Uganda funded by Caritas Norway has identified animal traction as one of the best ways to support farmers in their struggle and to support labour saving technology, market access for small holder farmers and the use of sustainable environmental practices in the region.
The groups being supported and guided by Caritas Lira are spread in the four different political districts of Dokolo, Alebtong, Oyam and Otuke respectively.
Rev Fr Boniface Okori Acuma the Director Caritas Lira Diocese, implored farmers to use the oxen being distributed to generate income and fight house hold poverty.
He also reminded the farmers to embrace other lucrative activities to remain self-reliant and boost their productivity.
The Director also emphasized the need for members in families to continue praying, cultivate the spirit of sharing and living in peace so as they can concentrate on development of their families.
Apart from giving oxen to farmers, Caritas is also sensitizing farmers to ensure food availability and livelihood strategies among selected rural communities in Lango sub region
Other strategy being used is creating awareness among farmers on the marketability of their produce through educational sessions conducted in form of meetings especially with selected groups, market survey among others.
Networking with key stakeholders, including but not limited to farmers groups, buyers, institutions to promote better linkages among farmers.
The activities of Caritas among the local communities in Lango sub region have achieved commendable results through various projects so far been accomplished.
