Fr Frank Mwinganyama

Having clocked a year of broadcasting, Kuwala FM, a Catholic radio of the Archdiocese of Blantyre in Malawi has been officially launched by the Minister of Information and Digitisation, Hon Gospel Kazako.

The function took place at Limbe Cathedral, where Kuwala studios are housed, on 5th February 2022. It was a simple but colourful ceremony that started with the blessing of the studio rooms and equipment by His Grace, Archbishop Thomas Msusa, the legal owner of the radio. Together with the Minister they toured the studio rooms and had the opportunity to speak live to Malawians.

In his on-air remarks, His Grace presented Kuwala FM to the faithful ‘as an important tool of evangelisation’. He called upon the faithful to make good use of this tool for both spiritual formation and the building social-cultural solidarity.

“Let this radio bring us together, promoting political and cultural tolerance in our country,” said Archbishop Msusa.

Honourable Minister of Information and Digitisation was happy with the invitation to launch this regional radio station. Speaking live on Kuwala FM Hon Gospel Kazako commended the Catholic Church and Archbishop Msusa for all development initiatives. He also expressed joy that the Church is increasing her presence in the media industry.

“It is pleasing to have more radio stations to bridge the information gap. Be assured of Government support in this important initiative,” said Kazako himself a seasoned broadcaster and media owner who expressed his conviction that Kuwala FM will grow.

In attendance at the function was the Director of Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA Mr Daud Suleiman who, on his part, stressed that the regulatory and licensing body is there to ensure professionalism in broadcasting not necessarily to be a watchdog.

Kuwala FM becomes the fifth Catholic radio in Malawi. It started live broadcasting on 1st February 2021, with its reach stretching across all districts within the metropolitan See of the Archdiocese which includes Chikwawa, Zomba and Mangochi Dioceses.

Kuwala FM operates under the motto “Lux Mund” a Latin expression which means “Light of the world.”
