ZAMBIA: Death Takes Lusaka Archdiocese Former Vicar General

The Archdiocese of Lusaka has lost its former Vicar General, Rev. Fr. Dr. Oliver Mukunta.

Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda confirmed the death of Fr. Oliver Mukunta, 62, in a statement sent to the Nuncio, the ZCCB President, Bishops, the clergy and the Christian faithful.

Archbishop Banda announced that Fr. Mukunta who recently underwent three major operations on his hips died on 24th Janaury,2022.

“Former Vicar General was recovering well but his condition worsened this morning when he was being taken for review at St. John Paul II Hospital. He was then rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” bishop Banda announced.

At the time of his death, Fr. Mukunta was Formator at St. Dominic’s Major Seminary and Parish Priest of Christ the King Kaunda Square Catholic Church.

Meanwhile Radio Maria Yatsani Voice reports that Most Rev. Alick Banda in his homily during the requiem Mass at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus expressed that God will grant the late Fr. Oliver the full measure of his rewards, having served the Church diligently as a priest.

Father Oliver Mukunta has since been laid to rest at the Kasisi Mission Cemetery in the outskirts of the capital Lusaka.

Fr. Mukunta was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Lusaka in 1987 and served the Church in various capacities as Parish Priest, Vocations Director, Judicial Vicar, and as Vicar General among others.
