UGANDA: Justice and Peace Commission Lira Diocese Takes Lead in Advocacy Resolving Land-related Conflicts

Justice and Peace Commission Lira Diocese is taking the lead in solving and addressing the rampant cases of land conflict in Lango sub region.
Speaking in an interview with AMECEA news correspondent, the coordinator Justice and Peace Commission Lira Diocese Mr. Okello Cyprian disclosed that, they are concerned about the numerous cases of land conflict in the region, the reason why they are taking initiative to hold community dialogue in a bid to resolve the matter.
According to Cyprian Okello, they have taken initiative to reach different parishes in a fact-finding mission based on sensitization of the people on land ownership, and making the rightful owners to own the land.
He went on to note that the overwhelming demands for land, high population growth in the region and other reasons are behind land conflict in Lango sub region.
At the moment he further disclosed that they are working in collaboration with the cultural leaders, religious and political leaders and other development partners with similar vision to handle land related conflict in the region.
Although faced with a number of dishonest people using their financial muscles to mislead and permeate land conflict, the coordinator said as Justice and Peace, they will continue to advocate for peaceful and amicable means to address land conflict in the region.
As Justice and Peace Commission, he noted that they are faced with financial constraint to facilitate their activities in the parishes intended to have land conflict managed.
He appealed to members of the public to refrain from forceful and violent means but embrace amicable way to address land conflict in the region.
Meanwhile other dioceses within Gulu Ecclesiastical Province are currently conducting community dialogue and sensitization not only on land conflict, but on how to live amicably in the spirit of brotherhood.
