UGANDA: Archbishop Lwanga of Uganda’s Kampala Archdiocese is dead

The Catholic Church of Uganda is mourning Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga of Kampala Archdiocese who was found dead in the morning of Saturday, April 3, a day after he joined the Uganda Joint Christian Council to commemorate the Way of the Cross.
“The Archbishop was found dead in his room this morning,” the Chancellor of Kampala Archdiocese, Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe said in a statement announcing the death of the Archbishop adding that, “We pray that the Almighty and merciful God may grant him eternal rest.”
Speaking on behalf of Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC), Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa said, “The members of the Conference extend their condolences to the clergy, Religious and faithful of the Archdiocese of Kampala, and the Catholic Church in Uganda.
Bishop Zziwa the Chairman of UEC and the Local Ordinary of Kiyinda-Mityana diocese added in the statement “Details of the funeral will be announced later.”
Reports highlight that Archbishop Lwanga joined other Christians from the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox faiths on Friday, April 2, for way of the cross.
One of the Church leaders from the Anglican Church Dr. Samuel Steven Kaziimba Mugalu who was with Archbishop Lwanga during the Way of the Cross has been quoted to have said, “Just yesterday, we walked on the way of the cross together and his death is a shock to all of us. His clear gospel voice of advocacy for the poor and oppressed, his commitment to Christian unity and justice for all will be dearly missed.”
Archbishop Lwanga was ordained Priest of Kampala in 1978, in 1996 he was appointed the first Bishop of the Kasana-Luweero Diocese and ten years later in 2006, he was appointed the third Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala to succeed Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala who attained the canonical age limit of 75.
