The Girl Guide Team under the Malawi Girl Guide Association (MAGGA) from the Catholic University of Malawi on Friday this week awarded learners from Namjodi Primary School in Thyolo district for taking good care of the trees they planted last.
Speaking at the event, Head Master for Namjodi Primary School Eston Sawelengela said the awards will motivate learners at the school to continue taking good care of the trees they are planting each year.
“These girls will help our learners to be responsible on trees they planting each year, once the rainy season is over, they are supposed to continue watering the trees and ensuring that these trees are not being destroyed by fire even animals that move around” Said Sawelengela.
He further urged the Girl Guide Team from the University to continue visiting each year to guide girls from early marriages and pregnancy as they continue guiding the environment through tree planting campaigns.
The Director of Girl Guide Team at the University Patricia Nyirongo said the awards will help in the implementation of their initiative, Plant and Adopt a Tree.
“We hope the awards will help these learners to continue taking care of the trees. We want this initiative to be successful and that can only be done by taking care of the trees we are planting,” said Nyirongo.
Nyirongo added that the Girl Guide Team will continue supporting girl child to remain in schools and shun early marriages and pregnancy that lead to school dropout.
The team further plans to reach out many learners in schools across the country as a way of ensuring that the country is registering low numbers of school dropouts due to early marriages and pregnancies.
Over fifty learners were giving note books, writing materials, mathematical instruments and pencils for taking good care of trees they planted last year.
The Girl Guide at the Catholic University of Malawi partnered with Team Adventure, The Hikers Alliance to implement the initiate of planting trees in schools in the country.
