TANZANIA: TEC Completes Translation of Code of Canon Law into Swahili

The first edition of Swahili version of the Code of Canon Law has been completed after the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) assigned the Canon Law Commission to work on its translation into the national language, Kiswahili, so that the lay faithful can easily understand Church law.
Speaking immediately after receiving copies of the edition, Rev. Fr. Henri Mchamungu, a Lecturer at St. Charles Lwanga Senior Seminary who is also Secretary of the TEC Canon Law Commission, said that in 2013 the Bishops’ Conference instructed that the Canon Law be translated into Kiswahili so that the lay faithful could understand the law more easily.
“It was not an easy task because the work of translating the law was very difficult in terms of finding appropriate Swahili words that would reflect accurately the intended meaning” said Fr. Mchamungu.
Fr. Mchamungu also said that they have printed a total of 4,000 copies of the translated Code of Canon Law and that they will be sold in accordance with the TEC procedure; the book will be distributed in various bookshops and will also be available at TEC.
