MALAWI: Catholic Schools Urged To Double Efforts In The Teaching And Learning Process

The Catholic Education Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has encouraged all Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in the country to work harder and be committed to helping the learners pass school tests and national examinations despite challenging conditions the schools are operating in.

The encouragement has come in view of the commendable pass rate in Catholic school during the 2019 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) which the Commission has recognized with gratitude. According to a statement by the National Coordinator of Catholic Education Commission, Rev. Br. Pascal Mtuwana, the Commission congratulates all Catholic secondary schools that have performed well during the 2019 examinations.

“We wish to congratulate the Boards, Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), Management, Staff and students of all Catholic secondary schools that have excelled in the 2019 MSCE Examinations. We note that the overall national pass rate is very low at 50.3% yet most of our schools have recorded 100% pass rates. This is no mean achievement,” reads part of the statement.

The statement further recognizes in a special way the outstanding 100% passing rate performance of Loyola Jesuit Secondary School, Likuni Boys Secondary School, Likuni Girls Secondary School and Ludzi Girls Secondary School in Lilongwe Archdiocese; Zomba Catholic Secondary School and St. Mary’s Girls Secondary School in Zomba Diocese; Chaminade Secondary School in Karonga Diocese; St. Patrick’s Secondary School in Blantyre Archdiocese; St John Bosco and Nkhamenya Girls Secondary School in Mzuzu Diocese.

The statement further indicates that the Catholic Education Commission is committed to promoting access to inclusive and value-based quality education which demands that all Catholic schools in Malawi continue working with zeal as mandated by the ECM. The schools are encouraged to ensure that students are being provided with education founded in deep faith in God and high moral standards and discipline in the context of the Gospel values and the Catholic Social Teaching.

In the same statement, ECM acknowledges the support which Catholic schools are getting from Government through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and other partners in education.
