Bishop Peter Musikuwa of Chikwawa Diocese of the Catholic Church has commended Pontifical Mission Society (PMS) Malta for various charity projects, which the society is conducting in the Diocese in a move to assist the families that were affected by the floods early this year to live a normal life.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a five-day joint projects monitoring tour by the PMS for Malta and Malawi.

Bishop Musikuwa who is also Bishop Chairman for Liturgy at the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) said Missio Malta’s gesture is commendable and worthy emulating.

“I’m happy that these people have travelled all the way from Malta, just to be with us and help us. In them we see that God has visited us and has blessed us with many graces; we are grateful especially for helping the vulnerable people in our Diocese,” he said.

“As baptised members of the Catholic Church, we all have the obligation to be concerned about the welfare of others, especially the vulnerable. These people from Malta have given us a good example of being a friend to those in need,” he added.

He has commended PMS Malawi for being active, a thing which has seen the Missio Malta projects succeeding.

On his part, leader of the Maltese delegation who is also the Head of Communications and Fundraising at Missio Malta Robert Farrugia said, “It was during our marathon in March this year when we heard of a sad news about floods in Malawi and we immediately started, mobilizing support from people in Malta who felt obliged to help the people in Malawi especially those in Chikwawa here. With guidance from PMS Malawi Director Father Vincent Mwakhwawa, we’ve managed to do it. However, our support will continue considering that we have seen for ourselves the challenges people are facing here and hopefully people from Malta will help us to come again,” he said.

Commenting on the projects, the Director of PMS in Malawi Father Vincent Mwakhwawa also expressed gratitude for the charity projects Missio Malta has undertaken, adding that he is impressed with the projects.

Missio Malta through PMS Malawi has constructed a VCT Centre building, two houses for physically challenged floods survivors, boreholes and donated assorted medical equipment and wheelchairs to vulnerable children.

The funds towards these initiatives were collected from well-wishers in Malta by Missio Malta through a televised marathon and other fundraising means.
