MALAWI: Conference of Catholic Bishops Donates To Malawi Flood Victims
The Zambian Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has donated assorted items, clothes and other items to the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) for the people who were affected by the Cyclone Idai and left in devastating situations in the country.
The donation came through the Diocese of Chipata, the nearest to Malawi. Speaking during the handover ceremony of the donation, the Bishops Secretary of Chipata diocese, Rev Fr. Felix Phiri, said the Church in Malawi and Zambia have a lot in common and the people are one. Therefore, seeing through video clips and international media that people in Malawi are suffering, the Church in Zambia is compelled to help with whatever they can.
“When the Holy father called for prayers for the victims of Cyclone Idai in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, the Church in Zambia set aside a Sunday for prayers and material collections. An announcement was made on Radio Maria in April asking people to contribute whatever they can, and the response was overwhelming. We are also obliged by the Gospel to help our sisters and brothers who are suffering,” said Fr. Phiri.
Representing the Secretary General of ECM, Rev Fr. Godino Phokoso said the Church in Malawi glorifies God and thanks the ZCCB for the donation. He continued that ECM appreciates the cordial relationship that exists between the two Conferences.
“ECM extends heartfelt thanks to the ZCCB and the people of Zambia feeling with us in the suffering of our brothers and sisters. This really shows that we are all members of a universal Church, united in every situation. I urge the Church in Malawi and Zambia to learn and continue supporting one another in times of need,” said Fr. Phokoso
At least 860,000 people were affected by the Cyclone Idai that hit mainly the southern part of Malawi, whereby 59 died and 672 were injured.
