UGANDA: Masaka Diocese’s Bishop-elect To Be Consecrated This Saturday

On Saturday July 6, all roads will lead to the Diocese of Masaka as Rev. Msgr. Serverus Jjumba will be consecrated to the episcopate.

Msgr. Jjumba, who was appointed by Pope Francis on April 16, 2019, will be ordained and installed as the fifth ordinary bishop of Diocese at a Holy Mass at Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka. He will replace Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa, whose resignation was accepted by the Pope upon reaching the age of 75 in March 2018.

The bishop-elect will be ordained by Bishop Kaggwa, who will be the main consecrator, assisted by other bishops from Kampala Ecclesiastical Province.

Bishops from across the country as well as the newly appointed Papal Nuncio to Uganda, H.E Luigi Bianco will be in attendance.

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is also expected to grace the event as Guest of Honour.

Born in Masaka on August 2, 1962 Msgr. Jjumba was ordained to priesthood on June 20, 1992. After completing his primary school education at St. Augustine’s and St. Paul Primary Schools in Kitovu he joined Bukalasa Minor Seminary in Kalungu to pursue his secondary school education.

He did his philosophical studies at St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Katigondo in Masaka and completed his theological studies at St Mary’s National Major Seminary-Ggaba in Kampala. He holds a Diploma in Religious Studies and a Master’s in Education from Makerere University, Uganda.

As a priest, he has served a number of roles including curate at Bikira Parish (1991-1993); formator and treasurer at Bukalasa Minor Seminary (1993-2000); Diocesan Treasurer (2000-2014); and Vicar General (2014 to date).

Msgr. Jjumba will be entrusted with the pastoral care of the diocese which has a Catholic population of over 1.8 million faithful across 54 parishes.
