KENYA: New Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan Arrives on Saturday
Newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, His Excellency Archbishop
Hubertus Matheus Maria van Megen is expected to jet in to Nairobi on Saturday, 4th, May, 2019 at 6.30 pm.
According to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) General Secretary, Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Rono, Archbishop Van Megen will be received by KCCB Chairman and Archbishop of Kisumu, Most Rev. Philip Anyolo; His Eminence John Cardinal Njue who is Nairobi Archbishop; and Most Rev. Anthony Muheria, the Archbishop of Nyeri. They will be accompanied by members of the clergy, Religious men and women, leaders of Catholic Men Association (CMA) and the Catholic Women Association (CWA), and choir members from the Archdiocese of Nairobi.
Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Van Megen as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya on 15th February, 2019. A month later on 22nd March 2019, Archbishop Van Megen was named as Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, meaning he will serve concurrently in the two countries just like his predecessor, Archbishop Charles Balvo who in September 2018 was redeployed to serve as Apostolic Nuncio to the Czech Republic.
Archbishop Van Megen, 58, has previously served as Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan and Eritrea. He also served as a Chargé d’ Affaires in Malawi between from 2010 to 2014.
Born on October 4, 1961 in Eygelshoven, Netherlands, Archbishop Van Megen was ordained priest on June 13, 1987, having completed his studies at the diocesan seminary of Rolduc. After ordination he served in parishes in Nieuweinde and Schaesberg in the Diocese of Roermond and later entered the Holy See’s diplomatic service.
