SOUTH SUDAN: Catholic Diocese Set to Build a Maternity Ward in Tambura State

Rt. Rev. Edwardo Hiiboro Bishop of Tambura-Yambio and Major Gen. Patrick Zamoi Governor of Tambura breaking the ground for the construction of the maternity ward.

On Easter Monday as people from different works of lives assembled at Tambura State Freedom Square for performances by all kinds, Bishop Hiiboro declared a donation of a full maternity ward.

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala said, the Italian Catholic Bishops Conference in Rome has donated the fund for the construction of a maternity block which will be useful for women and children.

“When you offer quality health services for women you support lives of all human beings because women are the centre of the life of any community,” he said.

Bishop Hiiboro also disclosed that the construction processes will start in a week’s time and that all materials including iron sheets, cement, timbers and bricks will be bought in Tambura State – only what is not in Tambura will be bought from outside.

Health situation remains one of the biggest challenges impacting on expectant women and children in South Sudan due to the conflict in the country. The death rate of unborn babies and mothers is significantly high due to lack health facilities on the ground.

This maternity ward in Tambura State will be the second after St. Teresa Nzara Hospital which is under the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, offering effective health services to the people in the Western Equatorial region.

The project was officially launched on Easter Monday by Governor Patrick Zamoi and blessed by Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala.
