ETHIOPIA: Catholic Church Continues to Provide Quality Education in Ethiopia
Ethiopian Catholic Schools Annual Forum has been held in Addis Ababa on April 8 – 9, 2019. The forum which is organized by the Ethiopian Catholic Church Social and Development Commission (ECC-SDCO) Education Team is attended by Diocesan Education Coordinators, Catholic School Directors and Religious Congregations.
This time, the forum discussed Catholic identity in Catholic Schools and the education road map for Ethiopia which is designed by the Ethiopian Government.
According to Mr. Solomon Abebe, ECC-SDCO Education Team Leader, the Catholic Church is striving to ensure that Catholic values are strictly observed in her schools in order to continue contributing to morally just and ethical citizenship in Ethiopia.
Currently, the Ethiopian Catholic Church has 430 Schools in the country, including one university. Most Catholic schools are located in rural areas, serving the educational needs of rural communities. The Catholic Church is the pioneer in bringing modern education into the country.
Historical records show that the Catholic Church began committing herself in modern education services in Ethiopia in 1617 in a place called Dembia; and in 1844 a modern school, Tsinseta Lemariam Catholic School, which still stands to date was constructed in Alitena.
Graduates of Catholic Schools in Ethiopia are nationally credited, often with the best scores of national exams, and they are serving the nation in various high posts including at international level.
