UGANDA: Bishop Sanctus Wanok Calls for Holistic Education In Lira Diocese

Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, new Bishop of Lira Diocese

Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, the new Bishop of Lira Diocese, has said that education is key in the evangelization mission of the Church. Bishop Wanok was speaking at the closing ceremony of a meeting organized by education commission of Lira Diocese, on the 18th March at Nazareth Family Centre.

The meeting which brought together priests and Religious men and women of Lira Diocese was convened to deliberate on the education status of Lira Diocese. Bishop Sanctus underscored the importance of education and exhorted all to build capacity from within and to inculcate values and virtues.

To him, education should teach our people how to benefit from technology. “The Church should be open to science,” said Bishop Wanok adding that the purpose of education should be for the formation and not merely to pass the examination. “…. that is why we have vices in society.”

Furthermore, he said education should teach people how to recreate, not just to spend time drinking. “…. Very importantly, education should teach people on how to stay healthy,” he added.

“Therefore, education ought to go hand in hand with catechesis. From education, our people would be potentially useful,” said Bishop Wanok.

He said he would appoint chaplains in all Catholic founded schools within the Diocese to ensure holistic education. For those schools without chaplains, there would be one priest in charge of education in a parish to cater for them.

He also told the Education Commission of Lira Diocese to speed up the process of updating the education policy of Lira Diocese, in order to overcome some of the challenges that affected the management of Catholic schools.

Bishop Sanctus concluded by stating that the priority of the Diocese should hinge on education, Catechesis, and health.
