SOUTH SUDAN: Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya To Serve South Sudan as Well

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed His Excellency Most Rev. Hubertus Matheus Maria van Megen to serve concurrently as Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya as well as South Sudan, just like his predecessor Most Rev. Charles Daniel Balvo who is currently apostolic Nuncio to Czech Republic.

While announcing the news, Rt. Rev. Edwardo Hiiboro, the President of Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference thanked Pope Francis for his continued thoughtfulness of the young nation whose citizens have continued to suffer due to political unrest.

“The Holy Father has continued to accompany us in many ways especially in promotion of faith and peace in South Sudan. Since we got independent, He has been close to us through his prayers for our country,” Bishop Hiiboro who is the local Ordinary of Tombura-Yambio said in a message shared with AMECEA Online News.

At the same time, he congratulated the new Nuncio on his appointment and promised him prayers, support and collaborations.

Bishop Edwardo is hopeful that the appointment of the Nuncio to South Sudan will accelerate the process of appointing new Bishops to the three current vacant dioceses in the country: Malakal Diocese, which fell vacant in May 2009 following the retirement of the late Bishop Vincent Mojwok Nyiker who died in January 2018; Rumbek Diocese, which fell vacant in July 2011 following the death of Bishop Cesare Mazzolari, M.C.C.I; and Wau Diocese which fell vacant in March 2017 following the death of Bishop Rudolf Deng Majak.

Archbishop Van Megen was appointed nuncio to Kenya on February 15, 2019. Previously he was apostolic Nuncio to Sudan and Eritrea.
