In an effort to promote new skills for sustainable livelihood and fighting poverty in the dioceses, the Association of Member Episcopal conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) in collaboration with the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) has organized a six-day inaugural training on ‘Self Sustainability and Self-Reliance for the Catholic Bishops in Uganda.

The workshop, which is currently underway at St. Augustine Institute in Nsambya, Kampala, commenced Sunday March 10, 2019, and will conclude on March 16. Over 16 bishops and one Diocesan Administrator from the four Ecclesiastical Provinces in Uganda are in attendance.

While opening the session, Rt. Rev. Joseph Anthony Zziwa, Chairman of the UEC said that the training is part of the ongoing priestly formation for bishops.

“I thank you all for coming for this Workshop,” Bishop Zziwa said adding, “Last month when I was in Rome for the Meeting on ‘Protection for Minors in the Church’, in the due cause of the deliberation it was mentioned that such trainings are not only meant for priests but also for bishops.”

The prelate further urged his fellow bishops to remember the 157 victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET 302 plane crash that occurred Sunday March 10, by observing a moment of silence during the training.

In his speech, the AMECEA Secretary General, Rev. Fr. Anthony Makunde stated that the objective of the workshop is to enable the Catholic Church in Africa become self-sustainable and self-reliant.

“Our plan is that after training the bishops who are the top most leadership in the Church, we organize similar workshops for those who assist them in the dioceses: the financial administrators, project coordinators and parish priest,” he said, adding that AMECEA has already conducted similar workshop for bishops in other AMECEA members’ Conferences including Ethiopia, Zambia and Tanzania.

He noted that the Episcopal conferences in Africa have continuously emphasized the importance of Church institutions being self-reliant whilst others have issued pastoral letters on the same.

The six-day training focused on topics such as Human Resource Management in the Light of Labour Laws in Uganda; Mobilization of Resources; Project Planning and Management; Financial Management; Leadership and Management in Church Institutions; Human Resource Management; Business Ethics; Church Social Teaching; and Implementation Research among others.
