MALAWI: Karonga Diocese Commissions Eight on Missionary Journeys

Bishop Mtumbuka Commissioning the missionaries

In line with the universal theme of the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019, to go out to the periphery, bishop of the Diocese of Karonga Rt. Rev. Martin Anwel Mtumbuka has commissioned eight men as missionaries to communities which have not yet been reached with the Gospel.

Bishop Mtumbuka has commissioned the eight during the launch of the Diocesan Year of Missio Ad Gentes at St Mathias Mulumba Parish in Misuku on the 9th of February, 2019.

Speaking during the ceremony that took place within the Eucharist Celebration, the Bishop stressed the need to take missionary work seriously even today.

“We have no excuse for not being missionaries to our brothers and sisters who have not yet known Jesus Christ. Those missionaries who came to share Christian faith with us met more terrible hardships than we can imagine today,” said Bishop Mtumbuka.

“Yes, the roads are bad but we have vehicles. The Missionaries of Africa who came to us here in Karonga had to literary walk from Lilongwe to this end. We have no excuse what-so-ever for not reaching out to our brothers and sister in the hard-to-reach places within our Diocese,” the Bishop further said.

Those commissioned were the laity from St. Steven’s Parish, St. Michael’s Parish, St. Anne’s Parish, St. Mary’s Parish; two others lay people from the Diocesan Curia Offices under the Pastoral Department; the Diocesan Radio – Tuntufye FM Radio; and Lusubilo Orphan Care.

The targeted places for the missionary work include Diyadiya, Mlowo, Ngana, and Lutushu – just to mention a few, which he described as “far away from everything and in the middle of nowhere.”

Bishop Martin Mtumbuka declared 1 December 2018 to 30 November 2019 the Diocesan Year of Missio Ad Gentes on the 24th of November 2018, at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral on the occasion of Annual Thanksgiving Mass.
