TANZANIA: Pope Francis Appoints Bishop of Tunduru-Masasi
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, on 8 December 2018, appointed Rev. Filbert Felician Mhasi Bishop of Tunduru-Masasi. The diocese has been without a Bishop since October 2017 when Rt. Rev. Castor Paul Msemwa passed on. Until his appointment, the Bishop-elect was parish priest of Christ the King Cathedral in Kwiro, Mahenge Dioceses.
The new Bishop was born on 30 November 1970 in Biro, Diocese of Mahenge, and he attended secondary school at St. Francis Minor Seminary in Kasita, Mahenge (1986-1992). He studied Philosophy at Our Lady of the Angels Major Seminary in Kibosho, Moshi (1993-1995) and Theology at St. Paul Major Seminary in Kipalapala, Tabora (1995-1998). He was ordained 3 July 2001 for the Diocese of Mahenge.
Since his ordination he served as follows: 2001-2003, student at Mwenge Catholic University in Moshi, where he obtained a Diploma in Education; 2003-2004, Vice-Rector, Bursar and member of teaching staff at the Minor Seminary of St. Francis in Kasita, Mahenge; 2005-2009, Student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania-USA), where he obtained a Master Degree in Philosophy; 2009-2014, Rector of St. Francis Minor Seminary in Kasita, Mahenge; since 2014, parish priest of Christ the King Cathedral in Kwiro and Zone Vicar; since 2015: Director of St. Joseph Secondary School and Diocesan president of the UMAWATA Association of Priests.
