SOUTH SUDAN: A Jesuit Priest Killed in South Sudan
A Catholic Priest Rev. Fr. Victor Luke Odhiambo, SJ was attacked and killed by unknown people on the night of 14th, November 2018 in Cueibet South Sudan.
Relaying the sad news to Waumini News Online, the Provincial of the Jesuits in Eastern Africa Rev. Fr. Joseph Oduor Afulo SJ said he learnt with great shock the killing of Fr. Odhiambo.
Fr. Afulo eulogised the late priest as a quiet but very knowledgeable man in many field and as an individual who was very committed to education especially to the people of South Sudan. “He lived a very simple life and believed in social transformation through a provision of holistic education,” Fr. Afulo said.
Fr. Odhiambo, who was the first Kenyan Jesuit priest, has been the principal of Mazzolari Teachers College and Acting Superior of the Cuibet Community of the Jesuits in South Sudan since January 30, 2017.
He was born on 20th, January 1956, joined the Society on 4th, July 1978. He was ordained a priest on 22nd, August 1987 and took his final vows on 30th, May 1993.
Fr. Odhiambo has served in the World’s youngest Nation for about 10 years. He first worked in Wau, then Rumbek and Cueibet until the time he met his death.
