ETHIOPIA: Catholic Church Hopes Election of a First Female President Will Inspire Women in the Country

The Ethiopian Catholic Church is pleased that women in Ethiopia are getting their rightful place in the development of the country. According to a statement from the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat (ECS), it is a blessing to see that Ethiopians are recognizing the invaluable talent women have to offer to the integral development of the nation.

This statement was made upon the election of Her Excellency President Sahle-Work Zewde as the first female President for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

The statement says that the Ethiopian Catholic Church believes that President Sahle-Work who has years of impressive diplomatic experience, will further strengthen the leading role Ethiopia is playing in the region and further enhance the soft power of the country at an international level.

It also took this opportunity to state that the Catholic Church has for years worked in the empowerment of women; providing young girls with education and other opportunities so that they may explore their potential.

According to the statement, the Church in Ethiopia hopes that the election of President Sahle-Work Zewde will inspire women and young girls throughout the country to recognize their potential and strive to become influential actors in the international arena.
