AMECEA: Gaba Publication-CUEA Press in Collaboration with Moi University hold the 8th International Annual Writers’ Conference
The event which continues to offer to both established and upcoming academic scholars a forum to showcase their research work was held at the institution between 25th and 27th September under the theme: Justice, Peace and Reconciliation: Current Challenges and opportunities for the Church in Africa.
Speaking during the opening of the event, the Executive Director of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) – Gaba Campus Dr. Simon Kang’ethe said that the annual event has become one of the most precious moments for the campus.
According to Dr. Kang’ethe, Pope Benedict XVI’s post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of 2011, Africae Munus, challenged the Catholic Universities in Africa to work for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation, and to look at the current situation facing the continent. As such, initiatives to promote Justice, Peace and Reconciliations especially in our East Africa Region are more than welcome.
“By addressing issues of peace and reconciliation, this conference is likely to be filled with the beatitude of the Gospel: blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called children of God,” he said.
This being his third year as Director of the Gaba Campus, Dr. Kang’ethe expressed that he has been elevated by the wide response to the call for papers in the previous conferences and the opportunities they have opened to him and to the participants. He explained that as fruits, these conferences have seen most of the presentations being published in the Africa Ecclesial Review (AFER), “a journal that is referee and with international reputation.”
He further indicated that the quality of the AFER Journal has made it respected widely especially in American and European university libraries. “This means that an article published in AFER enjoys international readership within Africa and abroad. In other words, given the internationality of its market, the author whose article is published in AFER gains international recognition.”
AMECEA Secretary General was represented by Social Communications Coordinator Rev. Fr. Andrew Kaufa while Keynote Speech was delivered by Rev. Prof Laurenti Magesa from Hekima College, the Jesuit Theological Center in Nairobi.
Key presenters during this 8th Annual Writers’ Conference were drawn from the CUEA, Tangaza University College, Moi University, Kabianga University, Kisii University, Bondo University, and Masinde Muliro University, among others. Among some of the notable presentations included Transformative Leadership: The Legacy of Bishop Korir in Peacebuilding; Towards Shaping School Curriculum for Peace, Justice and Reconciliation in Africa: The Role of the Church; Peace and Justice Commissions and the Ministry of Reconciliation in Africa; and Reconciling Multiple Identities of Church Leaders in Africa: The Case of Nairobi Catholic Leaders Choosing News Media Channels During Conflict.
