KENYA: Cardinal Berhaneyesus Appeals to Bishops in AMECEA Region to Support AMECEA Pastoral Institute
As the AMECEA Pastoral Institute (API) Gaba marks its Golden Jubilee, the Chairman of AMECEA His Eminence Berhaneyesus Cardinal Souraphiel, CM, appeals to all AMECEA Bishops to continue supporting the institute by sending participants as well as contributing towards the improvement of the institutes infrastructures especially the boarding facility which is currently in a deplorable state.
Cardinal Berhaneyesus who is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Ababa Ethiopia said that, support from outside donor organizations is dwindling therefore there is need to mobilize funds within the local churches of AMECEA Region to support the institute to be able to continue its operation noting that, Eldoret town where the institute is located is home to famous athletes who are known internationally for their prowess on the track. He challenged the institute community to take part in running of the college to mobilize funds for the institute.
“I ask both Gaba Campus CUEA Students and API participants to be good athletes. We could contribute from different aspects not only the Bishops and the Religious Congregations but also our lay faithful starting from our own students and help build this institute. We hope that when we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee, 25 years from now we will see a different API and CUEA Gaba Campus,” he said.
The Cardinal’s call for support to the institute came in the wake of the institute seeking support to refurbish its hostel to accommodate more students. According to the Director of CUEA Gaba Campus Dr. Simon Kang’ethe the current facility does not conform with the NEMA (National Environmental Management Authority) regulations because it is made of asbestos which is banned. He explained that by being able to expand and modify the structure they will get rid of the wrong roofing and raise the structure to one level up in order to have more accommodation and a conforming roofing material.
Meanwhile speaking at the same occasion the Secretary General Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo who is also the chairman of the Board of Management for API Gaba expressed gratitude to God and to everyone who have made contributions towards the progress the institute has made from being a pastoral institute to now, as part of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa CUEA.
He assured the institute that as board members they are committed to the realization of the Institute’s project reiterating Cardinal Berhaneyesus’ call to the AMECEA Bishops and the Religious community to be generous in sending participants to Gaba, saying that the institute exists for the service of all the dioceses and all the Religious Congregations in AMECEA Region,
“In the board we were recently discussing whether we can make offers so that dioceses and religious congregations that bring us more students and participants may be offered some scholarship and we are committed to that,” he said.
