SOUTH SUDAN: ‘The Country is collapsing, urgent aid needed,’ warns Catholic Bishop
As the humanitarian crisis worsens, President of Caritas South Sudan and Bishop of Yei, Rt Rev Erkolano Lodu Tombe has warned that their country South Sudan is in the state of collapsing with millions of people facing mass starvation.
Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe and senior officials from Caritas South Sudan gathered in Rome on Tuesday to discuss the operational challenges. They also gathered to scale up the global Catholic aid network’s urgent response in the country where famine has been declared in the midst of civil war.
Bishop Tombe stressed that the poor and the unarmed people in the country are suffering and people are dying. He warns that without support for emergency relief it will get worse.
Caritas is calling for international action to stop the ongoing violence in the country and ensure there are stable conditions to allow critical aid to be delivered.
Bishop Tombe continued that civilians are attacked wherever they are and are also considered as rebels or sympathizers when they go and harvest their crops.
He lamented that all the roads are blocked, especially in Yei and there is no way people can move away and for aid workers to rescue them. Bishop Tombe warns that over one hundred thousand people are trapped in Yei and with no support they will die of hunger.
