SOUTH SUDAN: UN describes starvation levels in South Sudan as alarming

United Nations or UN food experts say the levels
of starvation in South Sudan are “alarming”.
Alarming reports of starvation, acute
malnutrition and catastrophe levels of food insecurity are worse in hard hit
conflict affected areas, says the Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO in a
statement.
“A bleak forecast” for the rest of the year
indicates rapid reduction of food supplies likely to worsen food prices, the UN
experts warn.
“Food insecurity has spread to areas previously
considered relatively stable, highlighting the cumulative impact of conflict,
economic downturn and climactic shocks,” FAO declares.
FAO adds that continuous fighting in parts of
Equatoria puts the upcoming agricultural season at risk with alarming potential
to impact on food security all over South Sudan.
Meanwhile, hundreds of citizens in Western Equatoria’s Yambio town on Easter Monday
rode bicycles to demonstrate the search for peace and development in the
country.
According
to Fr. Gamboripai William Abbassi, the Youth Chaplain of Tombura-Yambio
Catholic Diocese, the bicycle ride enlightens public to cultivate the culture
of peace, the statement which was supported by State Acting Governor.
Bishop
Hiiboro said that young people should love sports and do something practical
for peace.
29
young men covered 12 kilometres in riding and 15 ladies covered the same
distance with fast riding from Hai Saura to Gbudue Stadium, an event which also
made the two winners (male and a female) receive two brand new motorcycles.
