TANZANIA: TEC mourns Bishop Gervas Kalanga OSB

Bishop Gervas Nkalanga

Episcopal Conference (TEC) mourns the death of the Bishop Gervas Nkalanga, OSB,
Bishop Emeritus of Bukoba Diocese that happened on 18 December 2015.
Bishop
Kalanga was laid to rest on 29 December 2015 at Hanga Abbey in Songea. He is
remembered by the Church of East Africa to participate and establish the
Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Africa and Middle East. He
participated in the celebration of the great Council of Vatican II
Bishop
Nkalanga joined the Benedictine Congregation after becoming an Emeritus Bishop and
went through all the steps of religious formation as required.  Upon completion his formation he obtained a
name Frt Placidus, OSB. 
He
was ordained a Priest in July, 1950 and on 21 May 1961 was ordained Bishop by
Pope John XXIII and made Auxiliary of the first African Cardinal H.E. Laurent Rugambwa.
Bishop
Nkalanga was among the Participants of the 1st AMECEA Plenary which was known by
then as ITEBEA in Dar es Salaam.
In
the year 1966 Bishop Nkalanga was sent to establish a new diocese in Kabale in
Uganda as Apostolic Administrator; an appointment which he carried out for
three years; that is until 1969 when Pope Paul VI appointed him as Bishop of
Bukoba taking over from Cardinal Rugambwa who was transferred to Dar es Salaam
.
Due
to Health Reasons Bishop Nkalanga retired in 1973 as Ordinary of the diocese, and
that was the time he decided to join the Benedictines Congregation.
