KENYA: AMECEA to work with Shalom Center for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation

Rev. Fr.

AMECEA Secretary General Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo has said that
the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between AMECEA and Shalom
Center for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (SCCRR) is meant to
strengthen AMECEA’s efforts towards Justice, Peace Reconciliation and Conflict
Resolution in the Region.
Fr. Lugonzo was speaking in his office on Thursday when he
welcomed the Executive Director of SCCRR, Rev. Fr. Patrick Devine, SMA, who paid
a Courtesy call to AMECEA Secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya.
“This work is a response to the message of the Second Synod for the
Church in Africa which emphasized on the theme of Justice, Peace and
Reconciliation, which AMECEA is committed to.” Fr. Lugonzo Said.
“The signing of the MoU comes at a time when AMECEA is seeking to
strengthen its Peace and Solidarity Commission. SCCRR comes in with a lot of
expertise as well as bringing on board its associate strategic partners who
will add value to the work of AMECEA,” Fr. Lugonzo said.
AMECEA Chairman, H.E. Berhaneyesus Cardinal Souraphiel, CM, and
SCCRR Executive Director Fr. Devine, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on
September 25th, 2015 at AMECEA Secretariat. It was in an occasion
that was witnessed by AMECEA Executive Board Members, AMECEA Secretariat Staff
as well as members of SCCRR.
In the MoU, AMECEA and SCCRR recognized that peace and
reconciliation are underpinned by acknowledging the past, reframing the present
and envisioning a shared future between communities. The essence of ‘religious
faith’ is humankind’s reconciliation with the ‘Divine’, reconciliation between
all humankind, inner reconciliation in each individual, and reconciliation with
creation. The MoU recognizes the important roles the parties can play in
promoting the dignity of life, peace, development and the potential benefits of
cooperation.
Both AMECEA and SCCRR desire to coordinate their efforts and
collaborate closely in promoting and advancing their shared objectives in the
service of African communities in the AMECEA Region, particularly among those
affected by structural violent conflict and associated injustices. In so doing,
the MoU will ensure a close institutional relationship for information sharing
and joint initiatives and activities, in areas of common concern and enable
both parties to contribute to the other’s program, agenda and strategy
development, to the extent possible.
