ETHIOPIA: Journalists asked to Promote Care and Protection of the Environment

The Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat (ECS) organized a one day
workshop for journalists of secular media on Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si.

Speaking at the event Rev. Fr. Seyoum Fransua, ECS Deputy
Secretary General, said that Laudato Si
addresses not just the Catholic community but the people of the world. He said
“The Encyclical Letter reminds us all of the danger our common home is facing and
where it is headed if we do not act as per the responsibility we are given by
God to care for all creations. As Journalists you have the responsibility to
pass on this message to the people of Ethiopia through your reports.”

The workshop was facilitated by the Social Communications and
Public Relations Department of the Secretariat aimed at familiarizing the media
personnel with the Catholic Social Teaching on environment. On the same
occasion, the efforts, so far taken by the Catholic Church in Ethiopia were
discussed in order to protect the environment and contribute to the green
economy policy currently being implemented by the government in Ethiopia. Laudato Si was presented to the
participants Chapter by Chapter in Amharic by and discussed upon in the
Ethiopian context. Fr. Seyoum said such workshops are very important because it
promotes the Catholic Church Social Teachings on various issues.

Journalists from public and private media in Ethiopia attended the
workshop with active participation. It was organized with the financial support
of Church in Need.
