In Uganda,
the preparations for the visit of Pope Francis due November 27-29, 2015 is
going on well following the launch of the official website,www.popeinuganda.org, and the logo on Tuesday, November 11, 2015 in Kampala.
The website, launched by
the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) at a Joint Press Conference with the
Government, allows the Ugandan faithful to know the life and teachings of the
Pope, his message of mercy and compassion ahead of his visit in two weeks’ time.
“We have the honour to launch
the official website and unveil the official logo that will be used for formal
purposes and on souvenirs to be sold out during the Papal visit to Uganda,”
said the Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese, Most Rev. John Baptist Odama, also the
chairman of the UEC adding. “The logo is an emblazonment of the 22 Catholic
Martyrs in a circular structure on the Ugandan map with Pope Francis in the
centre foreground. Blessed martyrs Daudi Okello and Jildo Irwa from Paimol in
Kitgum District are also included in the side. It also carries a picture of the
Basilica at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine (Namugongo) in the background.”
The website on the other
hand, will provide updates on the event, covering breaking news from
withinUganda and from the Vatican, as well as the latest videos and photos from
social media. It will also be the main resource for catechesis, official prayers,
songs, and liturgy guides.
The website also provides
historical context on previous apostolic journeys of the Pope and other Popes
who visited Uganda in the past as well as why Uganda holds a special place in
the heart of the Pope and in the life of the universal Church. It will also be
the go-to site for media accreditation and the official source of statements,
press releases, homilies, speeches and publicity materials.
The website and the logo
were commissioned by the Papal Visit 2015 Central Organizing Committee through
the UECInformation and Publicity Committee of the ICT Task team.
Archbishop Odama revealed
that all preparations for the Pope’s visit are almost complete and urged all
people of good will to continue with their generous donations towards the support
of the reconstruction of Namugongo and Munyonyo shrines, places where the Pope
will visit. He expressed hopes that the papal visit would open ways for further
journeys of faith and mission and called upon everyone irrespective of their
religion to come in huge numbers at the venues that will host the Pope.
“The pastoral visit of Pope
Francis focused on Mercy and Compassion would certainly offer vast
opportunities to experience grace, to hear callings, to value the poor, to
renew society, to care for creation and to live honorably. At the end of the
visit let us share stories of how the journey of Pope Francis to us has led us
to other journeys of faith and mission,” he said.
