MALAWI: Celebrating Mission Sunday: Catholic Faithful asked to embrace the spirit of sharing with the disadvantaged people

The Diocesan
Administrator for Mzuzu diocese, Monsignor Michel Mughogho has called on
Catholic faithful to embrace the spirit of Love and sharing with the needy people
of their society as it is one way of responding to God’s commandment.
Msgr.
Mughogho was speaking during the World Mission Sunday ceremony which was
celebrated on Sunday 18th October in all the parishes’ world over of
which in Malawi the main event was held at St Teresa, Katete Parish in Mzuzu
diocese.
According to
Mosgr. Mughogho the socio-economic development of the country is failing to
grow because people and Christians in particular, do not love one another hence
they need to embrace the spirit of sharing and love.
National
Director for Pontifical Missions Societies (PMS) of the Episcopal Conference of
Malawi (ECM), Fr. Vincent Mwakhwawa said the objectives of the celebration of
Mission Sunday include teaching and giving missionary formation to the
faithful; to share information about the needs of the Church worldwide and to
promote missionary vocation in the Church.
“One
universal activity on World Mission Sunday is the World Mission Collection. The
collection

The Faithful

is like any ordinary Sunday monetary offering (offered during Sunday
mass or prayer service). However, the World Mission Sunday collection becomes
an offering of the faithful community to the Church’s Mission Solidarity Fund,”
said Fr. Mwakhwawa.

He said
World Mission Sunday collection is taken as “a separate” or “a second”
collection after a normal Sunday collection, rather, it is the collection of
the day. However, the Parish Priest and other leaders of the Parish are free to
come up with creative ways of increasing the collection. Thus, it is acceptable
to organize other means of raising funds for the World Mission Sunday.
Other
fundraising activities for World Mission Sunday are encouraged in the
(missionary) spirit of sharing our material and spiritual gifts with others who
need the message of salvation, preached by the Catholic Church.
After the
World Mission Sunday is celebrated, the collection from all Small Christian
Communities (Miphakati) and Outstation is remitted to the Parish Office the
same week. The Parish remits the collection to the Diocese within the same week
or the second. From the Dioceses the money is sent to the National office of
the Pontifical Mission Societies at the Catholic Secretariat in Lilongwe, where
it is sent to the Holy Father in Vatican, in the World Mission Solidarity fund
of the Society for the Propagation of Faith.
