ZAMBIA: Government commends Catholic Church for promoting Girl-Child Education

Government
has thanked the Catholic Church in Lukulu district of Mongu diocese for
supplementing its efforts in supporting girl child education.
Speaking
during her visit to the school in Lukulu district where the diocese supported
the building of the dormitories, the Ministry of Gender permanent secretary
Daisy Ng’ambi said that the Catholic Church is making it easy for girls to
attend school regularly by providing accommodation for those who come from
far-flung areas.
“This is a
very good move by the Church, the corporate world should emulate what the
Church is doing by paying back to the communities as corporate social responsibility,”
Ms. Ng’ambi said adding that the government is ready to partner with
stakeholders working to uplift the living standards of girls and supporting
their education.
Fr Lazarous
Kayuni from Santa Maria Parish in Lukulu district said the Church built the
dormitory to help girls who walk long distances to get to school. He said the
facility was completed in July 2015 and accommodates more than 40 girls.
A grade 10
pupil who is a beneficiary of the facility said that some of her peers have
dropped out of school due to distance and early marriages. She thanked the
